Though PRTC sits at an altitude of about 1200 m, which does not typically favor cattle rearing, this small well-equipped ranch is maintaining and expanding its three herds of 359 animals. This section of PRTC is used to train other potential cattle farmers from the North West Province as well as to generate income.

PRTC is unique because it is operating a ranch system rather than the local system of transhumance cattle rearing. There are efforts to improve the ranch through the planting of highly nutritious forages like Bracharia ruziziensis and Guatemala Tripsacum Luxum. Bracharia ruziziensis seeds have been made available to other farmers so that they can also improve their own grazing land.

The cattle have a constant supply of fresh water that is derived from streams at the edge of the ranch. PRTC is also equipped with a modern dip where the animals are regularly de-ticked and a clinic for correct disease diagnosis and treatment.

Through a collaborative effort between PRTC and Heifer International, a pure Boran breed of bull was acquired and is being used to produce a Boran stock. The demand for this prolific meat producer, the Boran bull, is rapidly rising with time. Boran bull crosses are being sold to local farmers to improve their own stocks.

In the future, PRTC will be emphasizing income generation in this sector and has already provisioned for the acquisition of 50 Gudali heifers. In addition, a consultancy service has just been created to meet the needs of local farmers.

The cattle ranch also has an interest and the ability, albeit not financially, to accommodate persons interested in doing practical trainings.
